Lamb has been a mainstay of limited-ingredient diets for years, largely because it appears infrequently in mainstream pet food and most animals have not developed a sensitivity to it.

This is a whole-animal blend rather than a single cut. Muscle meat, organ, and bone are freeze-dried together, closer to what a carnivore would encounter eating prey than the muscle-only composition of most treats. Organ contributes concentrated vitamins and minerals that muscle does not carry; bone contributes calcium and phosphorus.

On the bone: freeze-drying removes moisture at very low temperatures rather than through heat, so bone retains its original structure rather than becoming brittle in the way cooked bone does. This is why whole-animal blends are freeze-dried rather than baked.

At 30% fat and 4,155 kcal/kg, lamb is the richest thing we make after duck. That is part of why dogs respond to it so strongly, and also why portions should be smaller than you might expect. If your pet is on a low-fat diet or has a history of pancreatitis, speak to your veterinarian before offering it.

Feeding guidance

Intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. Treats should account for no more than 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake, with the remaining 90% coming from a complete and balanced diet. Fresh water should always be available. Individual requirements vary — consult your veterinarian regarding your own pet.

• Cat: 1–2 pieces per day
• Dog under 20 lb: 2 pieces per day
• Dog 20–50 lb: up to 6 pieces per day
• Dog over 50 lb: up to 10 pieces per day

For smaller dogs and cats, break pieces into smaller portions. Whole-animal blends include organ, which is nutrient-dense — introduce gradually if your pet has not had organ meat before.
